Research

My academic research began with an honours thesis that investigated a cycle of players’ identification with their avatar in World of Warcraft. Ever since, I have been intrigued by the digital media, culture, and meaning-making and especially in the context of videogames. My research has included publications in education and pedagogy, social media and identity, and discourse analysis in the news media as well.

“Down Our Throats: Perceptions of Politics in Videogames” 


Through a close analysis of online game commentary, this article argues that the flashpoint conflict identified as GamerGate levered open a space in mainstream online spaces for highly partisan interpretation of videogames. Semi-professional critics feel that these typically left-leaning, ‘woke’ political perspectives are forced into games as part of an organized campaign to destabilize the industry.
